A pretty good start to the season after the first week after a summer’s break and a few new faces to Revolution finding their feet.
The A team managed a 9-1 win against Marston with a maximum from Olivier Autin and Dave Beddall. Keith McConnell dropped the only one against his nemesis Dave Wackrill who won in three straight games and then Keith coached Dave Beddall to gain revenge for his defeat last season eventually winning -7, 8, 7, -9, 3.
The B team comprising Ian Baldock, Henry Simmons and Owen Hewett, competing for the first time in Division 1, had a very good 3-7 result against last season’s third placed Biggleswade. Ian Baldock and Henry Simmons won a singles each beating Harvey Cross and then combined in the doubles to have an unexpected win in the doubles.
The C team, without Josh Hallam, had to pull in two members of the D team against the Bedford Community C team, Martin Walters in his first season for Revolution and Ben Baguley. Despite having not played for many years Martin showed that he can still hold his own winning two singles and narrowly losing his third against Mick Beveridge. Ben battled hard but couldn’t quite get over the finishing line. Usman, having spent the summer off, didn’t quite display his full ability and had a single win beating Mike Upton 11-9 in the fifth.
The D team had a comforatble 10-0 win against Bedford Community H with maximums scoreed by Martin Walters, Glenn Taylor and Chris Nicol.
The E team capatined by Bob Barron lost 4-6 to Bedford Community G team. Bob won all three without dropping a set and Kyle Aston fought back magnificently from 2-0 down to beat Tom Wharton -9, -9, 9, 8, 6. Sam Manning in his first season took all his matches to four sets and all were close but just lacked a little experience in closing the games off.
Barbara Wright’s F team were beaten 10-0 by Bedford Community F but Paul Armstrong playing for the first time had some long rallies and took four of his sets to deuce so hopefully his results will improve as the season progresses. Fergus Armstrong, in his first season, conducted himself well but lacks the experience currently to make an impression on the score card. Hopefully with youth on his side and his attendance at weekly coaching sessions he will start to make some noise in the new year.
